Dear Diary,

My son Michael and I have been playing a new game to keep away the night terrors. We hung a special calendar in the playroom. Every day that passes without seeing "the scary lady," Mrs. Corinthos, Michael gets to pick a happy sticker to put on the calendar. If we do see the scary lady, he picks a scary sticker.

Today is the second happy sticker in a row. He picked a sticker that looks like a sun with a smiley face, and as he stuck it on the date he said "Sunshine scares away the mean mommy!" A little time away from her makes him feel brave enough to joke like that.

We haven't seen the scary lady since she paraded Michael around the park on the Fourth. My poor son, the fireworks terrify him but Mrs. Corinthos would not be deterred. I suggested that she might be happier forgetting about Michael and having sex with Mr. Corinthos instead. She seemed tempted but in the end she took him anyway. That day Michael put two stickers on the calendar: a grasshopper beneath a grimacing skull.

I finished redecorating the master bedroom. Matching red satin sheets, curtains, purses, bras and diaphragms just aren't my style. And the mirror over the bed, aie! I burned the sheets and gave the rest to Goodwill, but saved the red satin from the curtains. Maybe I can use it for Michael's Halloween costume.

We've had so much time to ourselves that I'm even thinking about broadening my social life. Being a single mother makes it difficult to spend time on myself, but certainly not impossible. Yesterday managed to visit Reginald for the first time in weeks. He seemed a little distracted, he was reading a book called "Crone: Women of Age, Wisdom and Power." That's so spiritual!
